Cordless Lawn Mower Buying Guide

Battery

Perhaps the most important feature to consider when buying an electric cordless lawn mower is the battery. This type of mower uses a small but powerful lithium-ion battery that powers the electric mower, and the quality of the battery has a huge impact on its overall performance.

For example, the size of the battery determines how long the mower runs for on a single charge, so you want to choose something that gives enough time to mow your entire lawn in one go. Choose something too small for your lawn and you may find the battery does not last enough.

Additionally, the charge times vary significantly from each battery, some taking under an hour to fully charge while others take several hours. You want to ensure the charge time is not too long, as the last thing you want is for the battery to run out before you finish mowing, forcing you to wait several hours before you can finish.

There are two things to look out for in the mower battery – voltage (V) and ampere per hour (Ah).

Voltage

The most common voltages are 36V and 40V. These are suitable for most average size lawns, giving enough runtime to cut grass without needing to recharge.

If you have a larger lawn, then a larger voltage may be necessary – some go as high as 80V – although 36V or 40V batteries are suitable for most UK gardens.

Also, some batteries come with a lower voltage rating, with 18V and 20V being a good choice for smaller lawns that do not take long to mow.

Ampere per hour

Given in Ah, the ampere per hour indicates the runtime and charge time of the battery. Most lithium-ion batteries are either 2Ah or 4Ah, the former being used in small to medium mowers while the latter is usually found in larger models.

2Ah batteries are cheaper and offer a good runtime for mowing most average UK lawns. That said, there are instances where 4Ah batteries are a better choice, such as with gardens that are larger, sloped, or irregularly shaped. These tend to take longer to mow, so a 2Ah battery may not be ideal.

While a 4Ah offers more power and runtime, it also requires a longer time to charge. Charge times are quite varied between batteries, some requiring only 30 minutes charge while others need over 2 hours to fully charge.

Long charge times are quite inconvenient, so always be sure to check this so you are aware how long it takes. Many people opt to buy a second 2Ah battery (or a mower that comes with two batteries), effectively doubling the runtime while allowing you to charge one while the other is in use.

While this adds to the cost, it can be well worth the investment for the added convenience, and it’s often cheaper than buying a mower with a 4Ah battery.

Lawn Size

Always consider the size of your lawn when buying any type of mower buts especially a cordless mower that runs on batteries, as it will influence all the other things you need to consider when buying, such as what size of battery and cutting deck you need.

Lawn sizes are usually broken into the following categories:

  • Small – 200m² and under
  • Medium 200m² to 350m²
  • Large 350m² and above

Most average UK lawns fall under the small or medium category, meaning you’ll want a mower with a decent battery and cutting deck, but nothing especially large. Those with large gardens probably need to consider mowers with larger batteries and cutting decks.

For example, if your lawn size is 200m² then a 36V 2Ah battery and a cutting width between 34cm and 40cm should be fine.

Measuring your lawn is easy enough, assuming it is square or rectangular like most UK lawns. Simply measure the length and width of the lawn, then multiply them together to get the measurement in square metres.

Lawn Condition

While not as important as the overall size of the lawn, the condition does impact what type of product is best for your needs. For instance, if your lawn is already in good condition, then you won’t need to worry too much about a powerful mower, as well-maintained grass is generally easy to remove with the mower.

However, if you have a lawn that is overgrown, has lots of weeds, or tends to get waterlogged, then you may require more specific hardware. For example, overgrown lawns with lots of weeds are much more challenging to cut, so you may require a product with a powerful motor and battery that can accommodate the tougher conditions.

Similarly, sloped lawns and irregular shaped lawns can be trickier to mow compared to square/rectangular lawns and level lawns. These often require more effort to move, so choosing a lighter weight mower may be a better option, although this will mean the battery and mower is likely smaller too.

Cutting Height

Measured in millimetres, the cutting height of a mower refers to the height that the blade sits from the ground. Most mowers come with a few height options, and generally the more cutting heights you have available the better.

The reason that you want several cutting heights is because your lawn grows at different speeds throughout the season, and you should never remove more than one-third of the total grass length at one time.

So, sometimes you only need to remove a small amount of length, such as during the summer when the grass grows quicker so you are mowing more frequently, while other times you need to remove more length.

Having the option to switch between different cutting heights always makes it easier to get the perfect length for your lawn. By getting the best length possible, you encourage the grass roots to develop more strongly, resulting in more vigorous growth and a much healthier, more vibrant lawn.

Of course, many people do not enjoy frequently mowing their lawn, so if you only plan on doing it infrequently during growing season, then fewer cutting heights won’t be much of an issue. Those that want a well-maintained lawn should look for at least three but preferably five cutting heights.

Some products come with up to seven heights, although this will only be needed for those seeking a perfectly manicured lawn that is mowed frequently.

Cutting heights vary from 20mm to 80mm, so always check what options are included before you buy anything. Low settings are good for people that like a manicured or ornamental lawn, while higher settings let you remove a lot of length, making it good for people who mow less frequently.

We always recommend choosing a mower with as many cutting heights as possible. Having a good range of heights lets you get the desired finish for your lawn in different conditions and periods of the year.

Cutting Width

The cutting width or cutting deck of a mower refers to the size of the blade that cuts the grass. The size impacts how much grass is removed in a single pass, so the wider the cutting width the more grass is removed.

Therefore, it helps to choose a cutting width that is suitable for your lawn size, as using the wrong size can make mowing the lawn more challenging. For instance, if you have a large lawn (350m²) but choose a smaller cutting width (e.g. 30cm) then you will need to make several more passes compared to using a larger cutting width.

Cutting widths are typically given in centimetres (cm), and it is recommended that you choose one based on the size of your lawn. For example:

30-34cm               Small Lawn (200m² or smaller)

34-40cm               Medium Lawn (200m²-350m²)

40cm+                   Large Lawn (350m+)

You can choose a wider cutting deck for a smaller lawn, as it will take even less time to mow, removing a lot of the growth in just one pass. However, using a mower with a large cutting deck on a smaller lawn, especially narrow or irregular shaped lawns, can make manoeuvring it much more difficult.

Weight

A benefit of cordless lawn mowers is that they tend to weigh much less than corded electric and petrol mowers. The batteries and motors are compact and lightweight, resulting in lighter weight products that are easier to operate around the garden.

However, there are still models that are on the heavier side, meaning you may struggle to manoeuvre it if you choose something too heavy. Consider your overall strength and endurance when looking at the weight, opting for something that you can operate without feeling tired or fatigued.

Also, certain gardeners, such as elderly people, may want to look for the lightest models available, as these will be the easiest to push and pull across the lawn. You may need to choose a smaller sized product to accommodate this.

Extra Features

Mowers come with a range of extra features you may find useful, although these are likely to increase the costs, so consider whether the cost is worth the benefits they provide. If you like to maintain a good condition lawn, then some of these extra features are well worth the additional outlay.

For example, many come a mulching feature. This basically shreds the grass clippings into an even finer material, dispersing it across the lawn as you mow. These clippings act as a natural nutrient for the grass, meaning you are cutting and feeding the lawn at once – it also means less grass clipping to empty.

A grass box is another popular feature, saving the hassle of raking up the grass after you cut it. These are a common feature included with most mowers, although make sure to check the capacity to ensure it is suitable for your lawn size.

Other popular features include rear rollers, which let you give the lawn an attractive striped finish like on a football pitch, while some include a secondary battery to effectively double the runtime.

Cordless Lawn Mower FAQs

Are cordless lawn mowers worth the money?

In most cases, yes, as the cost of this type of mower has dropped significantly in recent years. They are quickly approaching the cost of corded mowers, with the additional cost being well worth it for the convenience of cordless and lightweight operation.

How long do battery powered lawn mowers last?

It depends on the product you buy, although most have an average lifespan of about 3-5 years, or around 500 battery cycles. You can likely extend this by replacing the battery, as the motor itself may last longer with some minor maintenance.

Are battery mowers as good as petrol?

While they lack the sheer cutting power of a petrol mower, battery mowers have many advantages over them. For instance, they are much lighter and easier to operate, while they make a fraction of the noise, produce no emissions, and do not require anywhere near as much maintenance.

Can you cut wet grass with a battery mower?

Yes, you can cut wet grass using this type of mower. However, it will force the motor to work harder, so will drain the battery faster. Like with any mower, it is best used on dry grass.

Which is better corded or cordless lawn mower?

It depends on your situation and requirements! Corded mowers don’t need to be charged, so you don’t need to worry about the battery running out mid mow, although their reach is limited so you may struggle to hit parts of your lawn.

Cordless mowers offer unrestricted movement, being lighter and much easier to manoeuvre. Assuming you buy the best cordless lawn mower for your lawn, then there should be no problems using a cordless mower over a corded mower.
