The Bosch Rotak R range is a series of corded lawn mowers featuring an integrated rear roller, giving gardeners the opportunity to create a nice striped effect on their lawn. However, we feel this is not the main selling point of this range of mowers, which happen to be some of the best priced in the market and perfect for most average sized lawns here in the UK.
Furthermore, these mowers are lightweight so simple to operate, even in gardens with irregular shaped lawns or uneven terrain. This makes them very accessible to most people and considering that reasonable price point it is easy to see why Bosch Rotak R mowers are so popular!
The Rotak 32 R is one of the smallest mowers in the series, being suitable for small and medium size lawns here in the UK. Equipped with a powerful motor, impressive usability, and a good selection of features make it a worthwhile investment for anyone seeking a reliable but affordable corded mower.
Let’s take a closer look at the Bosch Rotak 32 R to see what it has to offer:
Bosch 32 R Features
- 1200W Electric PowerDrive Motor
- 32cm Cutting Width
- 3 Cutting Heights (20mm to 60mm)
- 31L Grass Box
- Integrated Grass Comb
- Rear Roller
Motor and Power
The Bosch Rotak 32 R is fitted with a robust 1200W electric motor. Like all models in the series, this electric motor utilises the Bosch PowerDrive system, offering exceptional cutting power and reliable performance on all types of lawns.
This is certainly impressive given the smaller size of the mower. Despite being so compact and lightweight, it never sacrifices power and performance, with the innovative motor offering additional torque that rotates the blade at super-fast 3600rpms.
Many competitor mowers in this size and weight range struggle to achieve such impressive cutting speeds, so the Rotak 32 R is well equipped to handle those tougher lawns common throughout the UK. It can cut through long and dense grass, overgrown lawns, and even work well in damp conditions.
AS a smaller mower it is naturally best used in smaller lawns, although it certainly has the power to work well on mid-size lawns too. Anything up to 300m2 should be fine, although we recommend avoiding using it on anything larger as it is likely to increase mowing time.
At 32cm, the cutting blade is a great size for working on smaller lawns, while it is also a good option for most medium size lawns. It does work best on smaller lawns though, with the blade length perfect for removing large swathes of lawn in just a single pass.
For mid-size lawns, the cutting blade is a decent length, still removing a good amount in a single pass, although it will take slightly longer compared to smaller lawns. In any case, the blade is made from high-quality steel and produces a clean, precise cut for an attractive finish.
You can also replace this blade for a low price, saving the hassle of sharpening it once it naturally dulls – this shouldn’t be necessary for several years though.
The Bosch Rotak 32 R comes with three cutting heights, which is the minimum amount you want from a lawn mower. While not as many as other lawn mowers, these height settings cover the basic blade positions you want when mowing the lawn throughout the year, with heights including 20mm, 40mm, and 60mm.
The 20mm setting is great for those periods where you are mowing frequently so want to leave a close cut, such as during the spring and summer months. Other times, such as the first cut of the season, the lawn is best left a bit longer, gradually lowering the height to avoid things like scalping and bare patches. This is where the 40mm and 60mm settings are best used.
Also, these heights are not adjustable using a central lever system like many other mowers – you need to turn it upside down and manually adjust the wheels. It takes more time and effort than a lever on the cutting deck but is not the biggest inconvenience.
Weighing just 6.8kg, the Bosch Rotak 32 R is one of the lightest lawn mowers on the market, making it feel effortless to move around the lawn. This is highly appealing for many users, as pushing and pull a heavy and cumbersome lawn mower gets tiring quickly. People that struggle to move heavier objects, such as many elderly gardeners, will find this lighter lawn mower incredibly easy to operate.
The large wheels also help with usability, maintaining a steady balance when moving across uneven terrain or overgrown grass. So, if your lawn is not in the best condition or you have a sloped garden, the Rotak 32 R is a good choice has it is so easy to move around in almost any environment.
Many Bosch mowers come with ErgoFlex handles, and while it would be a nice inclusion, we feel it is mostly unnecessary with a model in this weight category. You really don’t need ergonomic handles because the mower is so easy to operate, plus it keeps the cost down.
Grass Box, Rear Roller, and Grass Comb
As with any corded lawn mower, the Rotak 32 R comes with a sizeable grass box (31L) that can accommodate all your clippings, most likely without ever needing emptied until you are finished mowing.
The mower deck also has integrated grass combs at each side, helping with edging across the lawn. These catch stray grass that is often missed along lawn edges, catching them in the first pass to save you time and effort going back and trimming the edges manually.
Also, the mower has a rear roller for creating stripes across the lawn. Simply move the mower backwards to create a stripe, alternating across the lawn to get that attractive striped finish.
- Powerful motor for such a small mower
- Incredibly lightweight so easy to operate
- Grass combs and rear roller allow for an attractive finish on the lawn
- Folds down for easier storage
- Need to manually adjust the blade height via the wheel position rather than using a central lever
