Frisky Fox PLUS 20" Petrol Lawn Mower review

While Frisky Fox is not a big name in the UK mower market, the company is producing some excellent quality petrol mowers that are available for reasonable price points. These robust mowers come with all the features you could want from a petrol-powered lawnmower, including ample cutting power, various cutting modes, and several cutting heights.

The Frisky Fox Plus 20” is a mid-size petrol mower that is suitable for larger gardens up to 500m2. Equipped with a powerful engine, it has plenty of cutting power for lawns of varying conditions, while the variable speed settings mean you can contorl the pace of the mower to suit your needs.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the features the Frisky Fox Plus 20” has to offer to see if it is worth your money:

Features

  • Wolf Dynamic 173cc Petrol Engine
  • Self-Propelled
  • Adjustable Seed Control Settings
  • 50.8cm Cutting Width
  • 7 Cutting Heights (25mm to 75mm)
  • 4-in-1 Cutting System
  • Grass Box and Lawn Striper

Engine

The Frisky Fox Plus 20” is fitted with a robust Wolf Dynamic 173cc 5.5Hp OHV petrol engine. This is a powerful engine that delivers high torque to the cutting blade, making it suitable for less maintained lawns that have longer grass or lots of weeds.

A 1L fuel tank is fitted to the side of the mower deck, allowing for quick and easy refuelling while offering a good capacity for longer mowing periods. For instance, the mower is suitable for lawns up to 500m2, which is roughly the size of two tennis courts, highlighting the impressive runtime the mower offers.

Furthermore, the engine delivers power to the wheels of the mower, making it self-propelled for effortless operation. This does not come at the expensive of cutting power and speed, with the engine delivering consistent performance throughout the mower.

It does use a recoil start system, which some users may struggle with initially, although it is easy to get the hang of it after a few tries. Simply pull the power lever on the handle bar, which releases the brake, then pull the recoil cord to start the engine. It starts the first few goes in most cases.

Cutting Blade

The Frisky Fox Plus 20” uses a 50.8cm (20”) cutting blade, offering an impressive cutting diameter that is needed for mowing larger lawns. Given this mower is intended for surface areas up to 500m2, it requires a wider blade to reduce mowing times, otherwise you will be spending far too long mowing the lawn.

At just over 50cm, this blade is the perfect size for working on large lawns. It removes large swathes of grass with each pass, ensuring mowing time is kept to a minimum.

Cutting Heights

The more cutting heights a mower offers the more control you have over your lawn maintenance. Sometimes the lawn needs to be left short, other times it best left long, with everything from the weather conditions to the current length of the grass influencing the mowing the requirements.

With seven heights ranging from 25mm to 75mm, the Frisky Fox Plus 20” offers all the settings you need for comprehensive lawn maintenance. Having so many options mean that you can adjust the blade in smaller increments, allowing you to get the perfect finish no matter the lawn’s condition.

All heights are adjusted using the central lever system, which is located above the right rear wheel. Simply adjust the lever in the appropriate direction to get the desired blade position.

Usability

Frisky Fox PLUS 20" mower folding

Petrol lawnmowers like the Frisky Fox Plus 20” use heavier components for the engine and bodywork, meaning that the weight of the mower is higher than an electric mower. This means using the mower requires a lot of strength and effort, something not every gardener has.

Thankfully, the Frisky Fox Plus 20” uses a self-propelled system, meaning that the engine delivers power to the rear wheels, effectively moving the lawnmower for you. This removes all the effort needed to move the hefty 35kg mower, making it simple to manoeuvre across your garden.

Better still, the mower comes with variable speed settings, meaning you get to contorl how fast the mower moves itself. This is an excellent feature, and not common in many petrol mowers in this price range, allowing you to adjust the speed of the mower to a setting that is ideal for your situation.

This means you do not need to worry about the self-propelled feature moving the mower too fast, as with many mowers, letting you adjust it to various speeds to suit all preferences and requirements. Whether you like to mow at a slow and steady pace or power through the lawn, the mower gives you complete contorl of the drive speed.

There are other features to improve usability, including oversized rear wheels for good balance and stability, making it great for uneven lawns with sloped sections. The mower handlebar has an ergonomic design for comfortable operation, including soft grip padding to avoid aches and pains on the hands and wrists. e

4-in-1 Cutting System

The Frisky Fox Plus 20” uses a four in one cutting system, offering various cutting modes to suit your lawn maintenance needs. Some of these are more useful than others, so here’s a quick overview of what each one offers:

Cut and Collect: A standard cutting mode, it cuts the grass and then discharges the clippings into the grass collector at the rear of the mower. The grass collector offers a spacious 50L capacity for all your lawn clippings.

Mulching: This cutting mode cuts the grass clippings into an even finer consistency and then disperses them back onto the lawn. These clippings break down into the soil, providing the lawn with added boost of nutrients. It is basically fertilising your lawn for free!

Side/Rear Discharge: Cuts the grass and then disperses the clippings back onto the lawn, either from the side or rear of the cutting deck depending on the side.

There is also a mat lawn striper, which is not quite the same as a rear roller but does produce a slight striped effect, although not at the same quality as rear roller does.

Pros

  • Uses a robust 173cc Wolf Dynamic engine
  • Self-propelled with variable speed settings
  • Four in one cutting system with mulching function
  • Ergonomic soft grip handles

Con

Roller mat does not produce the same quality stripe effect as a rear roller
